Coverage Counsel

Role: Full-time

Location: New York, New York, United States - Remote

Reporting to the VP of Claims, the Coverage Counsel will play a pivotal role in providing legal counsel for guidance to all matters related to coverage disputes and coverage initiatives. Responsibilities of this role will involve analyzing insurance policies, investigating claims, providing legal opinions, and representing clients in litigation when necessary. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in insurance law, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex legal concepts effectively. 

This position is currently remote but will transition to a hybrid role in the future, based in New York. Occasional travel to attend meetings, depositions, hearings, and other legal proceedings is required. We are also open to candidates relocating to Miami for this position.

What You Will Do

  • Review insurance policies to assess coverage and identify potential issues or ambiguities that may arise in coverage disputes.
  • Conduct legal research on relevant statues, case law and regulations pertaining to insurance coverage matters. 
  • Investigate claims to gather necessary facts and evidence to evaluate coverage and liability. 
  •  Provide legal opinions and recommendations regarding coverage issues, including the interpretation of policy language and potential exposure.
  • Manage coverage litigation, including drafting pleadings, motions and other legal documents and representing the company in court proceedings and alternative dispute resolution forums. 
  • Negotiate settlements and participate in mediation or arbitration proceedings to resolve coverage disputes efficiently and effectively.
  • Advise the underwriting team on risk management strategies, potential exposure, and best practices to mitigate future coverage disputes.
  •  Advise the underwriting team on coverage requests and manuscript wordings initiatives.
  • Support the Product Innovation Team on product development initiatives.

  • Help manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger
  • Reconcile insurance premium receivables and payables to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare, submit and maintain state surplus line tax filings
  • Calculate annual U.S. income taxes. 
  • Perform monthly and year-end close procedures

Compliance Analyst

What We Are Looking For

At Relm, our Mission is “To contribute to the building of the future by creating solutions for complex risks in innovative markets.” The Compliance Analyst will play a vital role in assisting the Chief Compliance Officer in the implementation and maintenance of the Compliance Program/framework and in promoting a culture of Compliance within the Company.

What You Will Do

  • Support and assist the CCO in managing the day-to-day operation of the Company’s Compliance program/framework.
  • Assists in enhancing awareness of and compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements including but not limited to the Bermuda Insurance Act 1978, the Insurance Code of Conduct and Cyber Security Code of Conduct for Insurers, the Bermuda Sanctions Regime.
  • Identifies and/or receives compliance issues and investigate and escalates to the CCO for resolution.
  • Conducts or coordinates training to ensure internal policies and procedures and best practices are understood and implemented.
  • Develops, initiates, maintains, and revises policies and procedures and standards/codes of conduct to support for the general operation of the Compliance Program and its related activities to prevent illegal, unethical, or improper conduct including but not limited to anti-money laundering, terrorist financing, proliferation financing, economic sanctions, entity due diligence, complaints, gifts and entertainment, fraud, business continuity management and data privacy.
  • Review of Know-Your-Customer (KYC), Customer Due Diligence (CDD) documentation and sanctions screening results during the account opening process and as appropriate on an ongoing basis.
  • Respond to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards of conduct by evaluating or recommending the initiation of investigative procedures. 
  • Performs compliance monitoring and testing to identify potential breaches and areas of compliance vulnerability.
  • Assist in the development/implementation of corrective action plans (CAPs) for resolution of problematic issues, situations in the future.
  • Assist in the management of regulatory onsite examinations including any resulting corrective action plans.
  • Assist in the management and coordination of internal/external auditors including any resulting corrective action plans.
  • Complete reports on a regular basis, and as directed or requested by the CCO, to assist in ensuring proper reporting to the board and senior management of violations or potential violations and the results of compliance monitoring and testing.
  • Assist the CCO in ensuring that all regulatory reporting is completed within required timeframes.
  • Assist in the documentation and tracking of all complaints, internal suspicious activity reports and reportable gifts and entertainment.
  • Assist in the development, conduct and/or coordination of compliance training for all applicable employees/parties including the board and senior management to ensure an understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, code of practice and company policies/procedures.
  • Other responsibilities as may be required by the CCO from time to time in execution of the Compliance Plan/Framework.
